Parameter Checklist for a Molybdenum Electrode Inquiry
WeiBeam · Electrode solutions for high-temperature melting
Molybdenum electrode inquiries often leave quotations hard to compare because key information is missing. This article sets out the parameters to provide item by item, covering application and furnace type, dimensions and purity, connection structure, quantity and lead time, inspection requirements, and packaging and transport, and explains how information gaps distort cost judgments.
When the same electrode drawing is sent to several manufacturers, the quotations that come back often differ in unit price, lead time and inspection items, and the gap usually stems not from machining capability but from the operating conditions not being spelled out at the inquiry stage. The more complete the information the buyer provides, the closer the supplier's process route and cost structure come to reality, and the fewer changes and disputes there will be later.
Start With the Furnace Type and Electrode Position
Molybdenum electrodes fail in very different ways in different furnace types. Electric boosting in glass melting furnaces, glass fiber tank furnaces, ceramic fiber furnaces, vacuum furnaces and crystal growth equipment each impose different requirements on current density, surrounding atmosphere and cooling conditions. The inquiry should state the furnace type, the depth to which the electrode is inserted into the glass melt or hot zone, the normal working temperature, whether alkaline raw materials are contacted, the frequency of starts and stops, and whether the electrode is inserted horizontally or installed vertically.
If the electrode contacts air at high temperature, oxidation becomes the main wear path; in a reducing or inert atmosphere the focus shifts to high-temperature strength and creep. Only when these conditions are written into the inquiry sheet can the supplier judge whether purity, grain condition or surface treatment needs to be adjusted.
Dimensions, Purity and Connection Method
Diameter, length, straightness and end structure should be marked on a sketch, with the permitted deviations stated. For threaded electrodes, state the thread specification, engaged length and coaxiality requirement; for clamped or flanged connections, describe the mating surface dimensions and fastening method. Purity is usually expressed as molybdenum content, and electrode material commonly requires not less than 99.93%, but a single number is not enough; state whether a composition analysis report is required, together with reference values for density and hardness.
The product specification page on this site lists the standard diameter and length ranges as a starting point for the dimension field; special sizes should be confirmed with an attached drawing.

| Parameter | Reference values and notes |
|---|---|
| Applicable processes | Electric boosting in glass fiber tank furnaces, direct-melt fiber drawing |
| Material and purity | Pure molybdenum / lanthanum-doped molybdenum / TZM available; Mo content ≥99.95% |
| Common specifications | Rod diameter Φ20–100mm, length 150–1500mm (custom sizes available to drawing) |
| Applicable standards | YS/T 1312-2019 Molybdenum Electrodes; molybdenum rods per ASTM B387 / GB/T 17792, molybdenum plates and discs per ASTM B386 / GB/T 3876 |
Quantity, Lead Time and Inspection Items
- Quantity: estimate from the number of furnaces, consumption per furnace and the spare ratio, and state whether delivery in batches is required.
- Lead time: give the desired arrival date and state whether partial deliveries are acceptable.
- Inspection: specify the requirements for dimensional sampling, visual inspection, composition analysis and density measurement, and who bears the inspection cost.
- Documents: format requirements for the certificate of quality, batch number, material report and packing list.
Inspection requirements directly affect cost. Requiring full dimensional inspection of every piece, as against batch sampling only, means different labor input for the supplier, and the quotation differs accordingly. If the company already has an established acceptance specification, it should be sent with the inquiry, so that the judgment basis is not debated after the goods arrive.
Packaging, Transport and Commercial Terms
Molybdenum materials are sensitive to moisture and impact in transit, so the packaging method must be settled at the inquiry stage: wooden case or pallet, whether a moisture-barrier film is added, the maximum unit weight, and the position of lifting points. For long-distance transport, agree on loading and unloading responsibilities and the time limit for opening and inspecting on arrival.
Payment terms, tax rate, who bears freight, the warranty period and the change-handling process should also be written into the inquiry document. For electrodes that need secondary machining, state who is responsible for cutting, drilling and thread machining, so that the boundary of responsibility is not blurred.
Preparing the inquiry as a small technical agreement takes extra time up front, but it makes the quotations comparable and leaves a basis for later acceptance. If you would like engineering staff to help check the parameters, submit the operating conditions through the customer service channel; for an overall view of the product line, see the Products section.
Frequently asked questions
What do quantity, lead time and inspection items cover for a molybdenum electrode?
Lead time: give the desired arrival date and state whether partial deliveries are acceptable. Quantity: estimate from the number of furnaces, consumption per furnace and the spare ratio, and state whether delivery in batches is required.
What do dimensions, purity and connection method involve?
For clamped or flanged connections, describe the mating surface dimensions and fastening method. Purity is usually expressed as molybdenum content, and electrode material commonly requires not less than 99.93%, but a single number is not enough; state whether a composition analysis report is required, together with reference values for density and hardness.
What are the rules for packaging, transport and commercial terms?
Molybdenum materials are sensitive to moisture and impact in transit, so the packaging method must be settled at the inquiry stage: wooden case or pallet, whether a moisture-barrier film is added, the maximum unit weight, and the position of lifting points. For long-distance transport, agree on loading and unloading responsibilities and the time limit for opening and inspecting on arrival.
