Electrode cost: from cost per kilogram to cost per tonne of glass

Purchasing teams usually compare cost per kilogram, but what determines a glass plant's actual spend is electrode life, replacement frequency and lost production during downtime. Comparing on that basis often changes the conclusion.

Move from cost per kilogram to cost per tonne of glass

In the example model on this page, electrode purchase cost is typically only 0.8%–1.5% of total glass cost, while furnace downtime caused by electrode failure can cost 3–5 times the electrode spend. Comparing unit price alone understates true cost of use.

Life elasticity outweighs price elasticity

Arithmetically, a 20% higher purchase price with 50% longer life lowers annual electrode spend by about 20%. When molybdenum prices are high, replacement frequency deserves more attention than unit price.

Downtime is the hidden main cost

In the example model (600 t/d furnace, 4000kW boosting), lost production from downtime is about 29% of annual total cost — more than the electrode purchase itself. This is why selling life and cost per tonne of glass is replacing selling molybdenum rods.

Closed-loop recycling hedges raw-material swings

Scrap molybdenum electrodes contain over 99% molybdenum, and remelting generally uses less energy than primary ore processing (the exact margin varies by route). Trade-in recovers material, reduces exposure to molybdenum price swings and supports supply-chain emission targets for export customers.

Illustrative cost model only (600 t/d furnace, 4000 kW boosting capacity), used to explain the cost structure and not to represent any actual project. Results vary with furnace size, glass type, power price and outage planning, and do not constitute a commitment for a specific project.

Recycling and trade-in coordination

Scrap molybdenum electrodes remain a high-grade molybdenum resource, but handling involves licensing, weighing, transport and record-keeping requirements in most jurisdictions. For electrode users, we coordinate with licensed recycling partners and match each request to a partner by region, material form and processing capability, reducing the effort and compliance risk of finding a recycler independently.

During coordination we help document the form, quantity, condition and delivery schedule of scrap electrodes, consolidate scattered disposal needs into an executable request, and connect you with a qualified partner. Handover records are retained for traceability and can be linked to a trade-in program.

If you have scrap electrodes to dispose of or want to evaluate a trade-in, provide the material form, quantity, region and delivery timing and we will help match a licensed recycler. Recyclers interested in joining our partner list can submit their business licence and scope of operations for verification.

We provide information coordination and partner matching only; we do not directly operate scrap molybdenum collection, transport or disposal. Licensed partners carry out recycling operations in compliance with applicable law. Weighing, settlement and responsibility are governed by the bilateral agreement.
