Six selection factors, from temperature to supply chain
The same electrode can perform very differently in different furnaces, often because selection looked at only one or two parameters. Evaluating the six factors below together makes the conclusion reproducible.
- 1Temperature
- ≤1400 °C: pure molybdenum is sufficient; 1400–1550 °C: fine-grain pure Mo or MoLa preferred; >1550 °C or very high current density: consider TZM or Mo-Zr grades.
- 2Medium
- Soda-lime glass is relatively mild; borosilicate, fluorine-containing and high-alkali glass are more aggressive, so increase density and allow 10%–15% extra diameter margin.
- 3Layout
- Sidewall entry favors rods (Ø50–100mm); bottom entry requires load and creep assessment; throat and forehearth zones favor plates.
- 4Power supply
- Single or three-phase, constant voltage or current, and voltage regulation determine current distribution and thus electrode section and quantity; confirm together with furnace design.
- 5Maintenance cycle
- If the furnace campaign is 8 years, design for four electrode changes rather than three, so the last change does not fall just before the cold repair.
- 6Supply chain
- Electrodes for one furnace should stay within a batch. Qualify two suppliers and hold about 15% safety stock, especially when molybdenum prices are high.
These factors summarize common engineering practice. Actual selection must be confirmed against furnace drawings, electrode layout and power-supply parameters.
Electric boosting adoption: the long-term demand variable
Policy: electrification is a clear direction
Industry and government programs continue to promote electrification and energy/carbon reduction in glass manufacturing, gradually raising the share of electric boosting in energy and emissions planning. Specific policy wording is governed by the official documents of the competent authority in each market.
Demand: adoption affects electrode consumption
Higher boosting adoption raises molybdenum electrode consumption, but the increment depends on furnace size, glass type and retrofit pace, and no single public estimate applies globally. When purchasing, the certainty of replacement frequency matters more than a one-off unit price.
Industry trend commentary only, not a commitment for a specific project. Policy wording follows the official documents of the relevant authority.
