Assessing Molybdenum Electrodes After Transport Impact Damage

If packaging is damaged in transit, molybdenum electrodes should neither be signed for without qualification nor written off as a total loss immediately. This article sets out the assessment steps, from impact location and dimensional re-check through to segregation and feedback, as a reference for site teams.

Molybdenum electrodes are long, slender components; if the packaging is not properly secured in transit, the ends and threaded sections are easily damaged by impact. When packaging damage is found on arrival, the shipment should not simply be signed for, nor should the whole batch be written off at once; assess it step by step.

Start with the Packaging and the Impact Location

Record the shape, location and severity of the outer carton damage to judge the direction of the force. After opening, check whether the electrodes have shifted, whether supports have come loose and whether the moisture-barrier film has been pierced. The ends and threaded sections are critical areas: photograph them separately and keep the original packaging for traceability.

Visual and Dimensional Re-check

Check the impacted area for dents, cracks and burrs, and measure whether diameter and length remain within tolerance. Check the threaded section with a thread gauge for go/no-go; light damage can be dressed, while damage that affects the fit should be segregated. Where necessary, add non-destructive testing to confirm there is no internal defect.

Segregation and Feedback

Store the items awaiting assessment separately and label them so that they are not mixed with accepted parts. When giving feedback, attach packaging photographs, the damaged location and measurement data so that the supplier can determine responsibility. The assessment conclusion should state whether the part is usable, usable at a reduced grade or to be scrapped; a bare note that there is a problem is not sufficient.

Reviewing How the Packaging Was Secured

On arrival, inspect not only the electrodes themselves but also how the packaging was secured: whether support timbers have broken, whether strapping has loosened, whether cushioning material sits between electrodes. Failed securing is often the direct cause of impact damage, and recording this information helps in discussing improvements with the carrier.

In the feedback, state the mode of transport, transfer conditions and damage location, and attach photographs of the outer carton and inner packaging. If similar problems recur on the same route, discuss changing the packaging or the carrier. The assessment conclusion and how the parts were handled should be documented in writing to avoid later disputes.

Light surface scuffing can still be used after dressing, but the location and size should be recorded and the electrode watched closely during the first period of operation.

During the assessment, do not grind or straighten the damaged area, as this changes the original condition and complicates the judgment of responsibility. Wait until the supplier has confirmed before treating the part.

For a whole shipment, segregate the damaged items first and inspect the rest through the normal process; there is no need to hold up the entire delivery.

Mark damaged items clearly so that they are not drawn in error.

Protective packaging requirements are described in the selection guide for this duty; confirm the securing method with the carrier before dispatch.

Industry practice on transport and packaging, together with product specifications and protection requirements, can be obtained from the electrode manufacturer.
