Common Questions on Drawing Confirmation for Custom Electrodes

Company NewsBy WeiBeam Technical TeamChinese version →

WeiBeam · Electrode solutions for high-temperature melting

Before a custom electrode order is placed, drawing confirmation often goes back and forth because datums, tolerances and notes are unclear. WeiBeam has compiled the common questions on dimensional datums, tolerance fits and service-condition notes to shorten technical communication and raise the first-time confirmation rate.

In the technical communication for custom electrodes, the number of drawing revisions often costs more time than the machining itself. WeiBeam has grouped the questions customers ask most often into answers; the key is to state datums, tolerances and service conditions clearly.

How to Set the Dimensional Datum

Use the mounting face or locating step as the datum, and avoid dimensioning from several datums at once, which accumulates error. Overall length, threaded-section length and insertion depth should be dimensioned separately, with related dimensions chained from the same datum. State the tolerance grade for undimensioned features on the drawing to reduce item-by-item dimensioning.

Item of concernTypical values and notes
Material and purityPure molybdenum / lanthanum-doped molybdenum / TZM available; Mo content ≥99.95%
Common specificationsRod diameter Φ20–100mm, length 150–1500mm (custom sizes available to drawing)
Applicable standardsYS/T 1312-2019 Molybdenum Electrodes; molybdenum rods per ASTM B387 / GB/T 17792, molybdenum plates and discs per ASTM B386 / GB/T 3876

How Far to Specify Tolerances and Fits

Give diameter, length and thread tolerances according to the actual fit requirement; there is no need to tighten everything. Features that fit the brickwork or the water jacket can be listed separately, with general tolerances elsewhere. For dimensions that will be fitted on site, note the machining allowance on the drawing.

Should Service Conditions Be Stated?

State the furnace type, operating temperature range, contact medium and installation method so that the supplier can judge the material and surface treatment. If the service environment contains corrosive components, say so in advance. Packaging, marking and documentation requirements can also be written into the technical agreement.

Drawing Changes and Archiving

The written version governs; note the change date and version number. Retire old drawing versions promptly so that machining and inspection do not refer to different documents. If a change affects material or heat treatment, reconfirm the delivery lead time.

The confirmed drawing, technical agreement and packaging requirements should be archived as a set, with purchasing, production and inspection each holding a copy. Check against the same version at incoming inspection to reduce disputes caused by version mismatch.

If the drawing is supplied by the customer, provide a 3D model or a key dimension table as well, to reduce misreading of the 2D drawing.

When confirming the drawing, involve both machining and inspection personnel so that ambiguities in the notes are found early. For features to be fitted on site, mark the adjustable range on the drawing.

Enter the drawing version number, confirmation date and confirming person in the title block, so that there is a record rather than a verbal confirmation that later leads to rework.

Keep the confirmation records in the same directory as the drawings for easy retrieval.

For drawing and specification questions, contact details are on the company information page; common electrode structures are shown in the electric melting furnace electrode section.

WeiBeam Expands Molybdenum Electrode Portfolio with New Lanthanum-Doped and TZM Alloy Series

Building on its pure molybdenum electrode line, WeiBeam has added lanthanum-doped molybdenum electrodes and TZM (titanium-zirconium-molybdenum) alloy electrodes, aimed at duties that demand higher high-temperature strength and longer replacement cycles. Together with the existing specially processed pure molybdenum electrodes they form a complete portfolio from routine electric boosting to demanding full electric melting, with standard-size samples (1-2 pieces per company, freight collect).
