How to Store Molybdenum Electrodes to Prevent Oxidation

Technical EncyclopediaBy WeiBeam Technical TeamChinese version →

WeiBeam · Electrode solutions for high-temperature melting

Molybdenum electrodes often spend months in stock between delivery and loading, and slow oxidation in a humid environment plus moisture absorption by molybdenum trioxide quietly degrade the surface. This article gives management essentials for humidity control, sealed packaging, segregated placement and first-in-first-out, and explains why re-inspection before loading is necessary.

Many people assume that molybdenum electrodes only wear inside the furnace, but the storage stage can equally send a good electrode into service already damaged. High-temperature oxidation is well known, yet slow deterioration at room temperature is overlooked all the more because it is inconspicuous; by the time the problem is found at loading, the loss is already determined. Storage management is the first link in the quality chain across the whole life cycle of a molybdenum electrode.

What happens during storage

In a dry room-temperature environment molybdenum is quite stable, forming only an extremely thin oxide film on the surface and keeping its metallic luster for a long time. In a damp warehouse, however, ground and polished surfaces gradually lose their luster and show mottled discoloration; for reused parts with a history of high-temperature service, residual molybdenum trioxide is highly hygroscopic and easily deliquesces, forming an acidic liquid film that in turn accelerates corrosion. Where chlorides and acid or alkali vapors coexist, pitting can eat small holes before anything is visible, and after loading these holes become the starting points of stress concentration and local overheating. For threaded parts, rust on the thread profile also changes the fitting torque and falsifies the fastening process parameters. Such deterioration does not show immediately after loading, but it rewrites the wear curve of the early service period.

Storage management essentials

  1. Keep the warehouse dry and ventilated; relative humidity should be held at a low level over the long term, avoiding condensation caused by day-night temperature swings;
  2. Place sufficient desiccant in the factory-sealed bag; repack damaged packaging and register it before shelving;
  3. Store on pallets off the floor; never store in the same area as carbon steel parts or acidic and alkaline materials, to prevent contact corrosion and iron contamination;
  4. Handle polished surfaces with clean gloves; sweat left by bare hands forms handprint-shaped corrosion spots;
  5. Register the storage date by batch and follow first-in-first-out; re-inspect items held in extended storage before loading;
  6. When stacking slender rods horizontally in several layers, control the number of layers and the support spacing to prevent sagging under their own weight and impact damage;
  7. Store with packaging; electrodes opened but not yet loaded should be resealed and registered.

Re-inspection before loading

Electrodes in storage for more than six months should undergo a visual inspection before installation, focusing on threads, chamfers and clamp contact surfaces; for long rods and critical bath sections, an additional ultrasonic spot check is recommended to confirm there are no new impact-induced hidden cracks from transport and storage. Slight surface discoloration can be restored by fine grinding, but the grinding depth must be included in the wall-thickness calculation; the load-bearing section must not be thinned just to look good. WeiBeam.com supplies a storage conditions instruction card with every shipment, in the hope that customers will manage electrodes as precision parts with a shelf life. For electrodes held in long-term storage, one more inspection is better than one more furnace shutdown. Oxidation prevention is not only a matter inside the furnace; every stage of the journey from warehouse to furnace chamber deserves careful attention.
